New Year's Eve (A Pantoum)

He sits and twiddles his thumbs,
as though the world might show
a more modest approach to living
while in such a meditative state.

As though the world might show
through a child's eyes
while in such a meditative state
how to see.

Through a child's eyes
the world is such a different place.
How to see?
No, how to undo.

The world is such a different place.
Do we see through innocent eyes?
No, how to undo,
when life is all but forgotten.

Do we see through innocent eyes
a more modest approach to living?
When life is all but forgotten,
he sits and twiddles his thumbs.
